Medicare & Referrals

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?

Yes! If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, you may be eligible for up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year. The rebate is currently $98.95 per session.

How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

You can book an appointment with your GP and ask for a Mental Health Treatment Plan to see a registered psychologist. Check this guide for more information!

Do I need a referral to book in?

No—referrals are optional. You’re welcome to self-refer at any time. You’ll only need a GP referral if you’d like to access the Medicare rebate.

Can I use private health insurance instead?

Depending on your provider and level of cover, you may be able to claim some of your session fees. Please check with your health insurer directly.

FAQs

What do I need from my GP?

In order to access the Medicare rebates, you need a referral letter. Alternatively, the referral is sometimes embedded within the MHTP document. To ensure you’re able to get your rebates without issue, an accurate referral letter should include the information below:

  • Client details (name, date of birth, address etc.)
  • Diagnosis or symptoms
  • Reference to a MHTP being in place
  • List of medications
  • Requested number of sessions
  • Reference to individual therapy
  • Referrer’s signature and provider number

Your referrer can send the referral directly to me via email, or you can upload it yourself when you’re completing the intake forms before our first session.
